Bacardi Express 2009

In March 2009 the Bacardi company chartered the Southern Aurora consist from the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum to run a special train between Melbourne and Sydney, with a number of concerts along the way.

In May 20006 VSH22 and FSH21 were involved in a shunting accident at the Dudley Street carriage yards. BCH122 was pushed into BCH121. The first pics are from about 10pm (the incident happened some time before then) and then the rest are later on at 1pm after the re-railing was complete. The final photos are after the collision repairs.

First day of VLocity operations - Ballarat line launch

December 22nd 2005 was the entry of V/Line's new VLocity trains into revenue service. I managed to catch the 1406 service to Ballarat, and the 1629 service from Ballarat. In this collection I've got pictures of the VLocity arriving at Southern Cross Station, for the first time with paying passengers on board, as well as the services that I travelled on.

Last days of S302

S302 was bought by West Coast Railway soon after they were formed, and ran with them for a number of years. After their demise it was purchased by V/Line, who continued to use it on the midday Warrnambool train, where it was often replaced by an N class. S302 made her last run on January 13, 2006 after which it was put into storage. It was subsequently sold to El Zorro who operate it today

Sprinter railcars are self propelled, but can be hauled by locomotives through the use of a special transition coupler. Here two broken down Sprinters were in the platform - 7002 and 7008, along with N453 waiting to take them away. The EDI Rail crew had a bit of difficulty getting the transition coupler to fit - necessary because of the different coupler types

New V/Line Mk3 livery

2007 saw V/Line introduce a new livery for their fleet - the third since 1983. Red, grey and white form the core colours, along with a purple stripe.

FSH25 was the first of V/Line's carriage sets to be repainted in their new corporate livery. It went to Geelong on a test run on September 4th. Sprinter 7007 has also been repainted in it's own new livery. Both trains were launched on September 12th, 2007 at Southern Cross Station. VN12 was the first N set to be repainted, and N468 was the first locomotive.

Since then a number of other carriage sets, locomotives and Sprinters have received modified versions of the new livery.

On Saturday 6 March 2010 a storm hit Melbourne with severe wind gusts and hailstones up to 10 centimetres wide. Rail and hail ripped large holes in the roof of Southern Cross Station, leading to its evacuation and forcing metropolitan and country trains to bypass the station. Repairs were estimated to cost $5 million, with 43 of the 60 air pillows needing replacement, work commencing in April 2010 and lasting 12 to 14 weeks.

On the weekend of 19-23 October 2019 Southern Shorthaul Railroad operated works trains to Southern Cross Station, carrying ballast, rail, sleepers and everything else needed to replace two double compounds in the yard at the north end of platforms 3 and 4.

Until the 2005 redevelopment as Southern Cross Station, passengers at Spencer Street Station used a pedestrian subway to access the platforms, as well as to pass under Spencer Street.

On January 25, 2009 the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre ran their 'Hills to the Bay' tour from Seymour to Geelong and return via Melbourne Southern Cross, with a sidetrip from Geelong to Melbourne and return. V/Line's N464 'City of Geelong' was the locomotive, with five red 'E' and five blue 'S' carriages in the consist, including the 'Yarra' parlor car, State Car 4, and Dining Car.

SRHC - Spirit of Progress 70th Anniversary Tour 2007

The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre operated a Spirit of Progress 70th Anniversary Tour, with locomotives B74 and S303 used along with the majority of the original carriage consist. The train ran from Seymour to Albury and return via Southern Cross Station, with a side trip from Albury to the turntable at Wodonga to turn Parlor Car and the locomotives.

On October 27, 2019 Steamrail ran a 'Rail and Sail' trip from Melbourne to Geelong and return behind K190. PCP292, Hobsons Bay (269 BZ), 14 BRS, 600 BK, 7 ABE, 38 BE, 25 BE, 17 BE, and 1 BCE made up the train.

VLocity derailment, September 2017

On September 25, 2017 VLocity VL51 derailed at the north end of Southern Cross platform 6. Two bogies ended up off the rails, with jacks being used to get them back onto the rails.

Water Tower Clock

The 'Water Tower Clock' was Flinders Street Station's original clock. Built in 1883, it relocated to Spencer Street in 1910, then removed in 1967 following the rebuilding of the station. It was restored in 1993 and placed at the Scienceworks museum at Spotswood, then moved to Southern Cross Station in 2014.

X'Trapolis transfer, 29 November 2019

On 29 November 2019 SSR locomotives T363 and P14 with the usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon BQHX 2447 led X'Trapolis train 170M-1385T-169M and 236M-1418T-235M to Alstom Ballarat for upgrade works. The train ran from Newport to Ballarat via the suburban lines and North Geelong, the locomotives having run around the consist at Southern Cross Station platform 8.
