V/Line - H set retirement

In July 2023 V/Line commenced retiring their fleet of H sets carriages, initially transferring them to Shepparton and later Echuca for storage.

On Friday 2 February 2024 the last H type carriage set ran in V/Line service. Set SLH33 ran an up service from Geelong and then back again in the evening, followed by an unplanned outing for carriage set SLH32 from Melbourne to Waurn Ponds that evening.

V/Line - Maryborough line launch

V/Line services to Maryborough were officially launched on Saturday July 24, with VLocities VL34 and VL38 running special trains on the day, and Premier John Brumby and Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula there for the opening ceremonies.

The train carried passengers from Melbourne as far as Ballarat, then took invited guests to Creswick, where an opening ceremony for the new station was held. Locals were allowed to catch the train to Maryborough where another opening ceremony was held. Five shuttle trips were run between Maryborough and the 214 km post for the locals (originally six were planned) before VL38 headed back to Melbourne, VL34 stabled to run the first up service the next day.

On 6 February 2021 V/Line sent N467 between Sunshine, Tottenham and Newport to train heritage train crews on the route via Brooklyn.

V/Line - Pacific National rescue failed a Warrnambool service, August 2006

On the morning of August 02, 2006 N452 failed at Warrnambool when it was supposed to lead the up morning service, so A81 was pulled off the freight and used to rescue the train. A79 was then sent back to Warrnambool to bring the freight back that night.

Following changes to platform height standards which were implemented at Deer Park station, in January 2024 V/Line modified Sprinter railcar 7014 to reduce the height of the plug doors to prevent them from becoming stuck on the platform when opened.

On July 2011 V/Line ran their first standard gauge service to Albury, after almost 3 years of bus replacements, and countless months wasted of back and forth between the different parties involved.

Following their replacement by the new standard gauge VLocity trains in 2022, V/Line's fleet of standard gauge carriages used on the Albury line were transferred to the SRHC depot in Seymour for storage. On 2 August 2022 six of the stored carriages, along with three recently retired carriages, were transferred by V/Line from Melbourne to Seymour and on to Albury, where they are being put into storage at Ettamogah on behalf of the rail heritage groups they are being handed over to. From north end the consist was ACN45, BN22, BN10, BN7, BRN34, ACN24 (all stripped of livery) then PTV liveried BN5, BRN43 and ACN48.

On 23 September 2021 recently gauge converted VLocity VS93 departed South Dynon for Seymour on standard gauge, in preparation for testing on the North East line.

V/Line announced the construction of centre cars for the two-car long VLocity units in 2006, with the first unit commencing testing in June 2008, with an entry to service in August 2008.

Over the weekend of October 2 and 3 V/Line ran a huge number of extra trains between Geelong and Melbourne for the 2010 UCI Road World Championships. The event turned out to be a bit of a fizzer: trains were still running every 10 minutes at peak times, but only four of the six originally scheduled push-pull sets ran (three with P classes, and one with N classes). The traffic disruptions in Geelong were so bad, the next person to propose Geelong hold an event like this will get tomatoes thrown at them in the Market Square Mall.

In January 2016 a large proportion of the V/Line VLocity fleet was withdrawn from service due to wheel wear issues, and a few days later they were banned from operations on the suburban network due to level crossing activation issues.

V/Line - Werribee line rail cleaning trains

Following the opening of Regional Rail Link for Geelong line services in June 2015, V/Line commenced operating rail cleaning trains on the old route between Werribee and Little River, in order to keep the rail heads free of rust for correct signal and level crossing operation. These operations stopped soon after, and in October 2015 Metro banned the operation of VLocity and Sprinter DMUs between Werribee and Manor Junction.

In May 2021 the broad gauge tracks over the Werribee Street bridge in Werribee were finally opened to trains, with V/Line running driver training runs over it to familiarise trains crews with the new signalling layout.

V/Line - West Footscray derailment, November 2011

Monday 12 December 2011

November 26, 2011 locomotive N470 and carriage set SN1 derailed at West Footscray when passing through a crossover. The loco ended up split between two tracks, but everything stayed upright.

In April 2020 V/Line ran a fleet of N classes light engine between Wyndham Vale and Sunshine in order to train drivers on altered signalling for the new Wyndham Vale stabling yard. A total of seven N classes were involved: two flights of three locomotives, and one running solo.

Wyndham Vale is a busy V/Line destination, with a large yard north of the station used to stabling trains for weekday commuter trains. Opened in 2020, this replaced services terminating in the turnback siding at Wyndham Vale South.

In January 2013 V/Line's fleet of Z type carriages were removed from service due to cracking occurring in the bogies. Replacement bogies were eventually sourced, with the carriages back in service by late 2016.

V/Line 'Green Star' parcels

For many years the ‘Green Star’ parcel service transported parcels onboard V/Line trains. The public parcel service was wound up in 2010, but V/Line still continues transporting blood products for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as part of a separate agreement.

In August 2019 V/Line locomotive P12 was fitted with GPS, LIDAR and 360 degree camera equipment and sent all over Victoria to collect data about the rail network. In April 2020 a second survey was undertaken by locomotive P15, with ground penetrating radar equipment supplied by Zetica Rail used to measure trackbed condition, including ballast depth, fouling and roughness.

In September 2021 V/Line's lacklustre preparations against the COVID-19 pandemic were exposed, when hundreds of V/Line staff were forced into isolation after a train driver tested positive, cancelling train services on Sunday 12 September, and resulting in a skeleton timetable that slowly returned to normal over the next two weeks.

V/Line industrial action 2023-2024

Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) members employed by V/Line undertook protected industrial action in the form of a work stoppage between 3am – 7am on Wednesday 13 December 2023, disrupting all V/Line train services. A limited replacement bus service was put in place during this time. Further strike action took place through January and February 2024.

Carriages managed by heritage operators have also appeared on special trains. In recent years these cars have been stored or passed to heritage operators and the carriages have appeared less frequently
