Aurizon commenced operating standard gauge freight services across Australia when precescessor Queensland Rail purchased Interail in 2002, CRT Group in 2005, and Australian Railroad Group in 2006. QR National was rebranded as Aurizon in December 2012. The company withdrew their Melbourne-Brisbane and Melbourne-Perth services in December 2017.

QR National grain hopper transfer, 2011

In April 2011 QR National diesel locomotives LZ3101, LQ3122, DC2206, LZ3103 and 45 AGWF grain hoppers were transferred via Melbourne from Western Australia to New South Wales to begin a new grain contract.
SCT and Aurizon trip trains in Melbourne

Between 2010 and 2017 SCT Logistics and Aurizon placed loading on each other's trains out of Melbourne, with trip trains moving Aurizon intermodal loading to SCT Laverton to head to Perth, and SCT loading to North Dynon to travel on Aurizon services bound for Brisbane.

SCT Logistics started their Melbourne-Brisbane service in 2010 with SCT vans attached to Aurizon BM7/MB7 services. They started operating their own services between Melbourne and Barnawartha (outside Wodonga) in 2016, these services being extended through to Brisbane in 2017.
