On the weekend of 19-23 October 2019 Southern Shorthaul Railroad operated works trains to Southern Cross Station, carrying ballast, rail, sleepers and everything else needed to replace two double compounds in the yard at the north end of platforms 3 and 4.

V/Line 'Green Star' parcels

For many years the ‘Green Star’ parcel service transported parcels onboard V/Line trains. The public parcel service was wound up in 2010, but V/Line still continues transporting blood products for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as part of a separate agreement.

Waurn Ponds cement train

Since the 2000s the main cement traffic in Victoria is from the Blue Circle Southern works at Waurn Ponds, outside Geelong. The major destination of the traffic was Lyndhurst in the south-east, which last saw a train in 2009, and Mildura and Somerton which saw the cement traffic end in December 2015.
