Metro Tunnel rail replacement buses - Northern group

Works on the Metro Tunnel portal at South Kensington and turnback platform at West Footscray have required Metro Trains services on the Sunbury and Werribee lines to be replaced by buses between North Melbourne, Sunshine and Newport, as well as V/Line services to Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.

Regional Rail Link rail replacement buses

For two weeks in July 2011 the railway between Footscray and Sunshine will be closed to allow the first stage of Regional Rail Link works to proceed. Metro's Sydenham line service will be replaced by a bus service between Albion Station and Flemington Racecourse - by the looks of the bus interchanges, this will not be the only series of disruptions.

During 2022 the Lilydale and Belgrave lines have been closed between Camberwell and Box Hill, buses replacing trains while the level crossings at Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert and Union Road, Surrey Hills are being removed by lowering the tracks, along with the two stations being replaced by the new 'Union Station' in the middle.

Transdev Melbourne leased buses

In mid September 2017 Transport Safety Victoria and VicRoads completed an audit of the Transdev Melbourne fleet of buses. Initially 33 buses at two depots were removed from service due to defects, with 100+ buses eventually being taken off the road once all depots had been visited. Buses from Dysons Group and Sita Buslines were 'wet leased' to fill the gaps, with Transdev drivers directing drivers on the 'foreign' routes. 'Dry leasing' soon followed, with Transdev drivers in charge of the foreign buses, with Kastoria and Mitchell Transit also supplying vehicles.

West Gate Tunnel project replacement buses

Between 23 June and 9 June 2023 trains on the Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines were shut down so that the West Gate 'Tunnel' project could widen the Dynon Road bridge over the railway at North Melbourne into a traffic sewer pointed at the Melbourne CBD.
