Steamrail - Western Rambler, April 2013

On April 27, 2013 Steamrail ran a 'Western Rambler' tour, with K153 leading T413. It ran from Newport to Sunbury via Sunshine, on to Southern Cross via Brooklyn and the Bunbury Street tunnel, up to Broadmeadows, back to Southern Cross then to Flemington Racecourse, and finally up to Upfield then back to Newport.

Steamrail - Williamstown shuttles 2012

On April 29 Steamrail ran a shuttle train between Williamstown and Flinders Street Station for the 2012 Williamstown Festival. K153 and K190 were used push-pull with a five car train, running four return trips.

On November 07, 2015 Y112 was transferred from Ballarat East to Newport Workshops for repairs, traveling via North Geelong and the new Regional Rail Link tracks.

Stony Point line

The Stony Point line is an orphan on the Melbourne suburban network, being an isolated shuttle service without electrification. A class diesel locomotives hauling MTH carriages were the usual consist for a decade, until replaced by Sprinter railcars in 2008. Trains running the service run empty cars between Frankston and Southern Cross for maintenance

Sunbury electrification project

Electrification of the Bendigo line between Sydenham and Sunbury started in 2008, and was completed in 2012. Diggers Rest and Sunbury stations were upgraded, a new stabling yard built at the end of the line, overhead wires were installed above the tracks, and four new traction substations were built.

Tram Bar at the Arts Centre Melbourne

In 2011 retired tram SW6.969 was converted into a bar and setup at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, being removed a number of times, only to return again come summer. In February 2013 it appeared again as 'Tram Bar', which closed for good in January 2015.

Transdev Melbourne leased buses

October 23, 2017

In mid September 2017 Transport Safety Victoria and VicRoads completed an audit of the Transdev Melbourne fleet of buses. Initially 33 buses at two depots were removed from service due to defects, with 100+ buses eventually being taken off the road once all depots had been visited. Buses from Dysons Group and Sita Buslines were 'wet leased' to fill the gaps, with Transdev drivers directing drivers on the 'foreign' routes. 'Dry leasing' soon followed, with Transdev drivers in charge of the foreign buses, with Kastoria and Mitchell Transit also supplying vehicles.

V/Line - Last A class services

With the April 2013 timetable change, V/Line changed their working timetable to remove the need for their A class fleet to haul any passenger trains. The last service was the up Bacchus Marsh on April 26, 2013.

V/Line - Pacific National rescue failed a Warrnambool service, August 2006

August 02, 2006

On the morning of August 02, 2006 N452 failed at Warrnambool when it was supposed to lead the up morning service, so A81 was pulled off the freight and used to rescue the train. A79 was then sent back to Warrnambool to bring the freight back that night.

V/Line - Regional Rail Link

V/Line - three car VLocity trains

V/Line announced the construction of centre cars for the two-car long VLocity units in 2006. This album has some photo-manipulations of the trains, as well as photos of the actual three car long units during testing in mid 2008. There are now a number of them in revenue service.

V/Line - UCI bike specials 2010

Over the weekend of October 2 and 3 V/Line ran a huge number of extra trains between Geelong and Melbourne for the 2010 UCI Road World Championships. The event turned out to be a bit of a fizzer: trains were still running every 10 minutes at peak times, but only 4 of the 6 originally scheduled push-pull sets ran (three with P classes, and one with N classes). The traffic disruptions in Geelong were so bad, the next person to propose Geelong hold an event like this will get tomatoes thrown at them in the Market Square Mall.

V/Line - West Footscray derailment 2011

December 12, 2011

November 26, 2011 locomotive N470 and carriage set SN1 derailed at West Footscray when passing through a crossover. The loco ended up split between two tracks, but everything stayed upright.

Since 2015 all V/Line services towards Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo have used the new Regional Rail Link tracks out of Melbourne. An exception to this is major disruptions, when the trains get sent the 'old' way.

V/Line to Bacchus Marsh

Photos of the V/Line services that run to Bacchus Marsh, taken between there and the end of the wires back at Sunshine. As well as boring old VLocities and Sprinters, loco hauled trains with A, P and N classes are also used in peak times.

V/Line via the Albion-Jacana goods line

The Albion-Jacana railway line links the Bendigo line near Sunshine to the main North-East line near Broadmeadows via a slow and indirect route. Normally used by freight services, V/Line occasionally diverts Seymour and Shepparton services via the route when the normal route via Essendon is blocked.

On 24 October 2007, the normal route for trains through Yarraville was closed due to a fatality. The down Geelong train I was travelling on was diverted via the freight lines, through the Bunbury Street tunnel, Tottenham Yard, Brooklyn, and the back of Newport.

Waurn Ponds cement train

Since the 2000s the main cement traffic in Victoria is from the Blue Circle Southern works at Waurn Ponds, outside Geelong. The major destination of the traffic was Lyndhurst in the south-east, which last saw a train in 2009, and Mildura and Somerton which saw the cement traffic end in December 2015.

Webb Dock line

Disused railway line in inner Melbourne, opened in the mid 1980s. Running from Melbourne Yard, over the Yarra River to the south bank to Webb Dock, only the line west of CityLink exists today, reserved for future rebuilding

X'Trapolis test run to Craigieburn

On 18 August 2017 brand new X'Trapolis train 239M-1420T-240M-237M-1419T-238M was transferred from the Alstom factory at Ballarat North to Epping Workshops, behind SSR T classes T385 & T386. The two locomotives and power van BVDY52 arrived at Ballarat from Bendigo the day before, travelling via Sunshine, Newport and North Geelong.

The Connex X'Trapolis EMU fleet required a number of modifications that were carried out at the Ballarat Workshops. Set 925M-1663T-926M + 919M-1660T-920M was transferred from Ballarat to Bayswater (via Geelong) with T377 as the motive power, with power van GVDY 52Y attached to the rear

Yarra Valley Tourist Railway
