Photos from New South Wales now online

Monday 7 November 2022 12:09 PM

It took three weeks, but I've culled down the 14,469 photos I took on my New South Wales roadtrip down to just 2,992 and got them all online here - enjoy!

Along the way you'll find photos of the the North-East railway out of Victoria, Streamliners 2022 at Goulburn and the Transport Heritage Expo in Sydney, the Southern Highlands and South Coast, steel mills of Wollongong, buses and trams in Canberra, and finally the Main South, Albury, Shepparton and Bendigo.

Back from a trip to New South Wales

Friday 14 October 2022 00:00 AM

14 days, 3,595 km and 14,469 photos later, I'm finally home from my New South Wales roadtrip.

Along the way I followed the North-East railway out of Victoria, visited the Streamliners 2022 event at Goulburn and the Transport Heritage Expo in Sydney, spent a few days photographing trains around the Southern Highlands, a few more days around the steel mills of Wollongong and the South Coast, and returned via Canberra, the Main South, Shepparton and Bendigo.

Now I need another holiday just to go though all of the photos!

Another milestone - 90,000 photos!

Sunday 10 July 2022 20:35 PM

Today I passed a milestone in photos uploaded to this site - 90,000!

I hit 10,000 photos way back in April 2009, 25,000 photos in April 2012, 50,000 photos in August 2017, 80,000 in September 2021 and 85,000 in January 2022 - the most recent 5,000 photos taking six months.

A little slower than my last 5,000, but still time flies!

Time sure flies!

And my backlog is finally cleared!

Saturday 1 January 2022 23:21 PM

It only took a month, but my backlog of photos to upload has finally been cleared - here's hoping that things don't get banked up again!

Bit of a backlog to get through

Thursday 9 December 2021 09:46 AM

After a busy few weeks, I've got quite the backlog of photos to upload - that's what happens after spending time photographing trains instead of sorting photos! At the moment I'm about two weeks behind, but hopefully I'll catch up one day.

80,000 photos!

Wednesday 15 September 2021 21:00 PM

It's taken sixteen years, but today I passed a milestone in photos uploaded to this site - 80,000!

This is the first time I've actually noticed such a milestone - I hit 10,000 photos way back in April 2009, 25,000 photos in April 2012 and 50,000 photos in August 2017.

Here's to a few thousand more!

Shooting myself in the foot

Thursday 22 July 2021 22:12 PM

The other night I did my usual updates to the web server that drives this website, and in the process I managed to blow away all of my data! Thankfully it's all back to normal now, and it only took me a few hours of wasted effort!

The backstory

My attempt to upgrade my webserver nuked the symlink to the data directory, then my attempt to recreate the symlink to get stuff working again, I deleted the actual data!

I have automated backups of the web server and the MySQL database, but I don't have automated backups of the data directory.

I eventually worked out how to recreate a working symlink to the data directory - I never documented it in my server build plan.

The next step was to reupload the 78900+ deleted files from my local backups, then check to see how out of sync that backup is!

On the upside, I had the database side of the restore working rather quickly and all of the metadata was available - I just need the (...)

I'm now on Instagram as well

Thursday 1 April 2021 00:11 AM

I've been on Facebook and Twitter for some time now, and thanks to the magic of automation I'm now on Instagram as well - you can follow me at @wongmsrailgallery. There you'll find my usual notifications of new photos, as well as my daily 'on this day' posts.

So my Facebook Page got Zuckered

Tuesday 23 February 2021 11:37 AM

I'm not sure what Facebook is up to right now, but it seems that single photo I've ever posted to the Facebook page for this site has disappeared, and I'm no longer able to create new posts, with links or without. I guess they think I'm a news website!

But no problem - you can still find everything right here on my website, including new uploads, and the "On this day" series.

And an update...

And now everything it back to normal - phew!
