Steamrail Victoria - Geelong 'Rail and Sail' October 2018

On October 21, 2018 Steamrail ran a 'Rail and Sail' trip from Melbourne to Geelong and return behind R761. 600 BK, 14 BRS, 17 BE, 68 BW, 38 BE, 46 BE and 1 BCE made up the train.

Stonyford derailment -September 2009

On the night of Saturday 12 September 2009 the evening down Warrnambool service hat a pine tree that had fallen over the line, lead loco N452 ended up on it's side and at a 90 degree angle to the line, second loco N456 managed to stay coupled even through it came off the rails. Four out of the five cars came off the rails, the rear two were removed on the Monday, the other three were lifted on Tuesday then taken away by rail on Wednesday.

The Stony Point line is an orphan on the Melbourne suburban network, being an isolated shuttle service without electrification. A class diesel locomotives hauling MTH carriages were the usual consist for a decade, until replaced by Sprinter railcars in 2008. In 2009 Pacific National started putting their older P, T, H and Y class locomotives into storage at North Geelong Yard, the units redundant following the downturn in broad gauge traffic and the availability of newer and more powerful XR and G class units. In 2010 more locomotives arrived, taking the collection to Y119, T399, H2, T388, P21, P23, T402, Y171, H3, H5 and Y174. In 2015 the locomotives were sold to Ettamogah Rail Hub, and transferred dead attached to the SRHC depot in Seymour for reactivation.

Stuck van at the Swanston Street tram stop

A delivery driver headed north up Swanston Street came to the end of the road at Bourke Street, and decided to drive down the bike lane. He ended up driving his van the edge of the tram stop platform, getting stuck on the tram tracks. Northbound trams on Swanston Street had to run 'bang road' to the Flinders Lane crossover to escape the obstruction, with services delayed for 40 minutes until a tilt tray track was able to extract his vehicle from the predicament.

Sunbury electrification project

Electrification of the Bendigo line between Sydenham and Sunbury started in 2008, and was completed in 2012. Diggers Rest and Sunbury stations were upgraded, a new stabling yard built at the end of the line, overhead wires were installed above the tracks, and five new traction substations were built.

On March 24, 2012 the Tramway Museum Society Of Victoria chartered Z3.185 in the Royal Tram livery to run a tram to commemorate the closure of the Footscray tramways.

Toorak Road West tram diversion

To make room for the Melbourne Metro station construction site at Domain Interchange, in June 2017 route 58 (formerly route 8) trams were diverted from Domain Road and Park Street to new tracks along Toorak Road West.

In 2011 retired tram SW6.969 was converted into a bar and setup at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, being removed a number of times, only to return again come summer. In February 2013 it appeared again as 'Tram Bar', which closed for good in January 2015.

The network of overhead wires used to power trams are divided into multiple electrical sections, so that faults can be isolated and maintenance work completed in safety. However if a tram stops with the pantograph resting in the middle of a section insulator, getting the tram moving again is hard work!
