V/Line transfers

V/Line often needs to transfer locomotives and carriages between workshops for overhaul or refurbishment.

V/Line via the Albion-Jacana goods line

10 October 2010

The Albion-Jacana railway line links the Bendigo line near Sunshine to the main North-East line near Broadmeadows via a slow and indirect route. Normally used by freight services, V/Line occasionally diverts Seymour and Shepparton services via the route when the normal route via Essendon is blocked.

V/Line via the Brooklyn goods lines

On 24 October 2007, the normal route for trains through Yarraville was closed due to a fatality. The down Geelong train I was travelling on was diverted via the freight lines, through the Bunbury Street tunnel, Tottenham Yard, Brooklyn, and the back of Newport.

VICERS vigilance control system

In 2006 the installation of the Vigilance, Control and Event Recording System (VICERS) commenced on all suburban electric trains in Melbourne. Originally due to be completed by 2010, it took until 2012 for the system to finally be tested and commissioned.

Victorian grain silos

Grain silos from across Victoria. Concrete silos fall into two types: 'Geelong' and 'Williamstown'. Older steel silos are the 'Ascom' and 'Murphy' types. Newer steel silos are 'Aquila' and 'Jumbo unit' types. Low to the ground structures are 'Behlen bins' and 'Victorian Oat Pool shed'. More detail at the National Library of Australia.

VLocity derailment, September 2017

On September 25, 2017 VLocity VL51 derailed at the north end of Southern Cross platform 6. Two bogies ended up off the rails, with jacks being used to get them back onto the rails.

VLocity transfers on the Geelong-Ballarat line

In December 2018 empty VLocity trains were transferred to/from Melbourne and Ballarat via the freight only Geelong-Ballarat railway, so they could access the Bombardier maintenance facility at Ballarat East. The usual route via Bacchus Marsh was closed to allow work on the Ballarat Line Upgrade to be completed.

VLocity transfer to Bendigo, November 2014

B75 and T386 transferred an accident damaged VLocity set VL12 to Bendigo on November 4, 2014. The set was involved in an incident on August 22 2014, when empty VLocity train (VL05-12-39, 7 cars) ran into the rear of a Metro Trains service between Galvin and Paisley on the Werribee line.

W8 class tram trials

In 2013 work the first two refurbished W class trams arrived in Melbourne - W8.946 and W8.959. Fitted with modernised traction, braking and suspension systems, the trams form a new class - W8.

Water Tower Clock

The 'Water Tower Clock' was Flinders Street Station's original clock. Built in 1883, it relocated to Spencer Street in 1910, then removed in 1967 following the rebuilding of the station. It was restored in 1993 and placed at the Scienceworks museum at Spotswood, then moved to Southern Cross Station in 2014.

Waurn Ponds cement train

Since the 2000s the main cement traffic in Victoria is from the Blue Circle Southern works at Waurn Ponds, outside Geelong. The major destination of the traffic was Lyndhurst in the south-east, which last saw a train in 2009, and Mildura and Somerton which saw the cement traffic end in December 2015.

Westrans was a brand used by Kefford Corporation for bus routes in the western suburbs of Melbourne, based out of their Sunshine, Altona and Werribee depots. In October 2014 it was rebranded as CDC Melbourne.

Wild winds delay Ascot Vale trams, October 2013

On the night of September 30 strong winds blew the roof from an apartment block in Maribyrnong Road in Ascot Vale, blocking trams on routes 57 and 82 until the wreckage was removed.

William Street tram stop crash

A southbound ute managed to crash into the 'safety zone' fence on William Street at Bourke Street, destroying it. Thankfully no passengers were there waiting for a tram!

Wolseley, South Australia

On 3 October 2018 brand new X'Trapolis train 281M-1441T-282M + 283M-1442T-284M was transferred from the Alstom factory at Ballarat North to Epping Workshops, behind SSR T classes T386 & T385. The two locomotives and power van BVDY52 arrived at Ballarat from South Dynon the day before, travelling via Newport and North Geelong.

On 9 July 2019 SSR locomotives P17 and P18 with the usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon BQJX 2481W led X'Trapolis train 98M-1349T-97M and 179M-1390T-180M to Alstom Ballarat for upgrade works. The plan was for the train to reach Ballarat via North Geelong, the locomotives to run around the consist at Tottenham Yard, but instead they continued through to Melbourne Yard, running around there, then heading to North Geelong via the Brooklyn goods lines.

On 11 July 2019 SSR locomotives P17 and P18 with the usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon BQJX 2481W led X'Trapolis train 47M-1324T-48M and 943M-1672T-944M to Alstom Ballarat for upgrade works, travelling via North Geelong, with a run via the suburban lines through Footscray to run around at Melbourne Yard.

Y168 and power van ZVDY 52 transferred brand new X'Trapolis set 81-82M and 83M-84M from Ballarat to Newport via North Geelong, one of the newly assembled sets at the United Group Rail workshops. Y168 is the current Ballarat Workshops shunter, having taken over from Y145 a few weeks earlier.

On 30 April 2019 newly acquired SSR locomotives P18 and P17 took power van BVDY51 to Newport Workshops for a HCMT transfer, then transferred X'Trapolis train 29M-1315T-30M and 53M-1327T-54M with usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon AFGF 3Q from Newport Workshops to Alstom Ballarat via Sunshine and Bacchus Marsh for upgrade work.

T357 hauled 6-car X'Trapolis 893M/894M and 955M/956M from Newport Workshops to the United Group workshops at Ballarat for upgrades to the 'Public Address, Passenger Information System & Closed Circuit Television' (PAPIS-CCTV) system that will allow it to operate in revenue service with the new 2nd series X'Trapolis trains. Generator fitted guards van ZVDY 52 also going along to power the auxiliaries of the suburban set, with T357 and Y145 had brought the van to Melbourne the night before.

The two locomotives and power van BVDY52 arrived at Ballarat from Bendigo the day before, travelling via Sunshine, Newport and North Geelong.

X'Trapolis transfer, December 2017

On 20 December 2017 Southern Shorthaul Railroad locomotives T363 and T385 and power van BVDY52 transferred a brand new X'Trapolis train from Ballarat Workshops to the Epping Workshops in Melbourne. Leading set 255M–1428T–256M was in a plain white livery, while 253M–1427T–254M had the usual Metro livery already applied.

T413 transferred brand new X'Trapolis set 5M-1303T-6M and 7M-1304T-8M from Ballarat to Newport, along with the usual power van ZVDY 52. So new that it had no identifying marks (other than 'unit 3' and 'unit 4' taped in the windows) the set had been taken directly from the docks to Alstom Ballarat to fix up the floor, the interior fitout was also carried out.

On 9 January 2019 T386 and T381 led X'Trapolis train 163M-1382T-164M and 933M-1667T-934M from Newport Workshops to Alstom Ballarat via Sunshine and Bacchus Marsh for upgrade work. Along with the usual power van BVDY52, freshly overhauled flat wagon AFGF 3Q was added to compensate between the lower than normal coupler on the X'Trapolis EMU and the higher than normal coupler on the BVDY power van.
