Bayside Rail Project

In May 2013 Premier Denis Napthine announced the $100 million 'Bayside Rail Project' to upgrade the Frankston railway line, and bring X'Trapolis trains to the route. Two token services run by X'Trapolis trains being introduced just before the 2014 State Election, with the cost of the project blowing out to $115 million.

A person died at Williamstown Beach platform 2 on February 15, 2012 sometime before 4pm. The body bag stayed on the platform for at least 30 minutes: trains towards Williamstown ran express through platform 2, but passengers for the city could still wait for trains on the opposite platform, looking over to the body bag.

C's On The Northeast Tour 2015

On November 21, 2015 C501 and C510 led a train from Melbourne to Albury and return, using the Steamrail fleet of standard gauge K carriages. Due to Southern Cross only have two standard gauge platforms that are both occupied on Saturday mornings, the train commenced empty cars at South Dynon, then picked up passengers at Broadmeadows station.

Cairns Kuranda Steam Railway

For eight months in 2004 the Cairns Kuranda Steam Railway once ran a steam service using ex-South African Railways 24 Class steam locomotive #3620 and a set of ex-QR SX carriages. Today they run the 'Savannahlander' service under a contract with QR, and shunt the cement siding at Cairns using a pair of ex-Emu Bay Railway 11 Class diesels.

Established in 1983 with a single W2 class tram converted into a restaurant, in the years since a number of other trams have joined the fleet that runs around Melbourne every lunch and dinner time. Comeng pushing a Sprinter - July 2011

On the morning of July 27, 2011 an up Geelong service operated by Sprinter 7021 ran out of fuel at Footscray station. The passengers were taken off the train, then a 6-car Comeng set led by 372M pushed the Sprinter to Flinders Street Station. One crew were in the front of the disabled Sprinter to sight the signals and controled the brakes for the combined train, while a second crew drove the Comeng.

T357 took a Comeng EMU set from Newport Workshops to the UGR workshops at Ballarat. The set was 575M-1138T-576M + 404M-1018T-403M, the GVDY power van was not needed but went along for the ride so T357 could bring an X'Trapolis train back

Down Craigieburn service with 570M-T-M + 309M-T-M ran up the back of the down empty Apex train which was stopped at a signal outside Craigieburn station. 570M-T-M received most of the damage and needed to be cut apart; 309M-T-M was shunted off by T402 and taken to Broadmeadows as a complete train.

A look at the crumbling citybound station building at Newmarket station on the Craigieburn line, where everything is falling apart. The cantilevered platform verandah was reinforced with acrow props in 2012 and demolished in 2013. As for the piers holding everything up, even bigger acrow props have been installed to counteract the failing concrete piers and beams.

On September 27, 2014 D3 639 was transferred light engine from the Steamrail depot at Newport to Castlemaine, where it will spend the summer on the Victorian Goldfields Railway. The transfer had to change ends at Southern Cross Station

Damaged pantograph and overhead - April 2009

Comeng 532M-T-531M + 542M-T-M (the prototype seating set) became dewired from the overhead on the up side of South Kensington, destroying all 4 pantographs and pulling down a fair chunk of overhead. Passengers from the rear set had to be detrained via the tracks. An N class later picked up the damaged train.

Derailed tram on Elizabeth Street - May 2013

On May 18, 2013 tram works were underway on Elizabeth Street in the Melbourne CBD, with a temporary crossover in used just north of La Trobe Street. Z3.229 was headed south over the crossover when the trailing bogie derailed, leaving the tram skewed across the tracks. Once the tram was rerailed the crossover stayed out of use for the rest of the day, while the bolts holding it down were adjusted.

DERMPAV - Colac trip, August 2012

On August 5, 2012 diesel electric railcar RM58 headed from Southern Cross to Colac and return. On the approach to Winchelsea station the train hit a fallen tree which damaged the radiator, but was still able to limp into the station. N474 was sent from Geelong to rescue RM58, taking the railcar back to Newport where it was shunted into the workshops.

On May 19, 2012 the Diesel Electric Rail Motor Preservation Association of Victoria took RM58 on a route of the suburbs, with a focus on the goods lines that ARTC would let passenger trains access.

The route taken was:
- Southern Cross platform 7
- Newport platform 2, change direction
- Altona sidings and to Brooklyn via the West line (broad gauge only track)
- Over the Tottenham flyover, past Tottenham Yard and through the Bunbury Street tunnel
- West fork towards North Dynon Junction, to just before Dynon Road, change direction
- East fork of triangle past MPC, stop just on the east side of Dock Link Road, beyond signal DYN134, change direction
- Take south fork, then Bunbury Street tunnel through to Sunshine platform 2, change direction
- Back to the city via the passenger lines.
- Southern Cross platform 8 north, change direction.
- Over the Essendon flyover to Flemington Racecourse platform 1, change direction
- Back via the Essendon flyover to Flinders Street platform 10, lunch break
- Down to Sandringham, change direction
- Flinders Street platform 10

DERMPAV - National Party charter to Colac, October 2015

On 28 October 2015 RM58 was the first heritage train traverse the Regional Rail Link tracks - chartered from DERMPAV by National Party candidate for Polwarth David O'Brien for a journey from Melbourne to Colac and return.
