Steamrail - Suburban Mystery Rambler, February 2009

On February 28, 2009 Steamrail ran a 'Suburban Mystery Rambler' tour around Melbourne. Starting at Newport it ran via the goods lines to Tottenham and South Kensington, then to Ashburton, back to South Kensington where it went along the goods lines to Albion and Broadmeadows, and finally to Flinders Street, Frankston and Stony Point. From there it went back through Flinders Street to Sunshine, then via Brooklyn to Newport. T395 and T356 were the locomotives, top and tailing 5 cars.

On March 9, 2013 Steamrail ran a a 11 car train from Melbourne to Tocumwal and return with locomotives S303 and S313. The entire down trip was a few hours late, the train having been timetabled by V/Line into platform 3 at Southern Cross where two S classes cannot fit! After all of the extra shunting was required, V/Line decided that a 40 minute window before the down Shepparton departed was not enough, so we got held until their departure at 0914.

On 12 October 2019 Steamrail ran their 'Warrnambool Westcoaster' tour from Southern Cross to Warrnambool via Regional Rail Link. Steam locomotive R711 and diesel S313 led the train, made up of carriages PCP 292, 11 AS, 5 AS, Hobsons Bay (269 BZ), Moorabool, 8 AS, 14 BRS, 2 BS, and 600BK.

On Saturday 29th October 2022 steam locomotives A2 986 and R761 ran the 'Warrnambool Westcoaster' trip from Melbourne to Warrnambool and return. The train ran with the R class at the rear of the train as far as Camperdown, serving as a bank engine on the steep climb upgrade in the Geelong Tunnel. The remainder of the trip double headed to Warrnambool, as well back to Melbourne.

It ran from Newport to Sunbury via Sunshine, on to Southern Cross via Brooklyn and the Bunbury Street tunnel, up to Broadmeadows, back to Southern Cross then to Flemington Racecourse, and finally up to Upfield then back to Newport.

On 17 November 2019 T356 led the 'whY not Suburban Tour' from Southern Cross Station to Somerton and Werribee via Sunshine, Essendon and the Bunbury Street Tunnel. Originally intended to be hauled by Y class steam locomotive Y112, it was a late scratching due to mechanical problems. The train was made up of carriages 600BK, 14BRS, 17BE, 25BE, 7ABE and 1BCE.

On 21 March 2021 Y112 was finally able to lead the 'whY not Suburban Tour' that was first attempted back in 2019. Timetabled to run from Newport via the goods lines to Southern Cross Station, Sunshine, Somerton, Essendon and Westall, the down leg to Sunshine via the Bunbury Street Tunnel was dropped for an express run via the suburban tracks due to late running, and issues with Y112 saw the leg from Somerton to Westall dropped for a direct return to Newport via the goods lines. T356 then took the over train from Newport to Southern Cross and return.

Steamrail - Wycheproof Weekender October 2008

Steamrail ran a weekender tour from Melbourne to Wycheproof, leaving on Friday night with R761, T356 and S301 and arriving on Saturday morning. The train stabled at Wycheproof station, with S301 taking the train home on Sunday. The train ran early until Maryborough, where it had to wait for the proper departure time. It ran back via the straight, the photos are from Sunday, between Wycheproof and Bacchus Marsh.

On 8 February 2020 Steamrail Victoria ran their 'Y Class Shunters Tour' around Melbourne. The tour started at Newport, with Y164 being joined by V/Line shunter Y163 at Southern Cross Station, then running to Werribee, Westall and Maddingley, before returning to Southern Cross and Newport.

Stony Point line

The Stony Point line is an orphan on the Melbourne suburban network, being an isolated shuttle service without electrification. A class diesel locomotives hauling MTH carriages were the usual consist for a decade, until replaced by Sprinter railcars in 2008.

Stored Comeng trains at North Shore

Friday 1 April 2022

In August 2021 the first Comeng trains were withdrawn from service and placed into storage at the North Shore sidings in Geelong, with a total of four 6-car sets transferred. After being thoroughly trashed by vandals, and one carriage damaged by fire, between January and May 2022 the trains were individually returned to Newport, Bendigo and McIntyre to be scrapped.

In August 2021 the first Comeng trains were withdrawn from service and placed into storage. The first four 6-car sets were transferred to the North Shore sidings in Geelong for storage, with subsequent sets sent to Tottenham Yard.

In 2017 a number of ex-Freight Australia locomotives previously sold to the Ettamogah Rail Hub were transferred to Ettamogah for long term storage pending possible reactivation to service.

In 2009 Pacific National started putting their older P, T, H and Y class locomotives into storage at North Geelong Yard, the units redundant following the downturn in broad gauge traffic and the availability of newer and more powerful XR and G class units. In 2010 more locomotives arrived, taking the collection to Y119, T399, H2, T388, P21, P23, T402, Y171, H3, H5 and Y174. In 2015 the locomotives were sold to Ettamogah Rail Hub, and transferred dead attached to the SRHC depot in Seymour for reactivation.
