Pacifc National grain trains

Grain is a major freight traffic in Victoria, but drought has cut the level of traffic in recent years. Trains operate on both broad and standard gauges, with the main destinations being export terminals at Melbourne and Geelong, as well as Portland, and a number of domestic flour mills

Pacific National A and X class locomotive scrapping

In January 2019 Pacific National commenced the scrapping of stored A class locomotives A73, A77, A81 and A85 at South Dynon. These units had been put into storage in late 2014 after seeing little use for many months. In April the scrapping of stored X class locomotives X41 and X42 commenced, followed in May by X39 and A79.

Pacific National Apex quarry train

The 'Apex' train carries gravel and other quarry products from Kilmore East on the North East line, to Westall in south-eastern Melbourne, Brooklyn in western Melbourne, and North Shore in Geelong. Originally operated by the Victorian Railways, V/Line, Freight Australia then Pacific National, in 2016 Qube Logistics won the contract.

Pacific National broad gauge Mildura freight

The Mildura freight runs from Merbein (just north of the town) to Melbourne and return for Wakefield Transport. The train is made up of standard and refrigerated containers, as well as a small amount of cement loading. Until recent years oil tankers, louvre vans and LCL containers were also attached to the train. With gauge conversion of the Mildura line, in late 2017 the service was rerouted to serve a temporary freight terminal at Manangatang on the parallel Robinvale line, with a standard gauge service taking over in mid 2018.

Pacific National interstate steel trains

Pacific National carries raw materials and finished steel product to and from the BlueScope, Arrium and Onesteel plants at Port Kembla, NSW and Westernport, Victoria; with trains running Melbourne-Wollongong-Brisbane and Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth.

The flour mill Kensington at Kensington is one of the last to be rail served in Victoria, grain wagons are taken there on a regular basis, requiring a convoluted route through the suburban and freight lines, with a reversal in Melbourne Yard. Until November 2017 this service was operated by Pacific National.

Until 2009 Pacific National operated trains delivering logs to the Midway export woodchip plant at North Shore in Geelong, with logs sources from Bairnsdale and Wodonga. Y class locos are often used to shunt the wagons at Geelong

Until June 2013 Pacific National operated the Maryvale Paper train that ran from Melbourne to the Australian Paper factory at Maryvale, north of Morwell. The service is now operated by Qube Logistics.

Pacific National Warrnambool freight

The Warrnambool freight carries containers between Melbourne and the Westvic depot in Warrnambool, usually running Monday through Friday. Operated by Pacific National, except for a period between April and October 2008 when El Zorro took over the contract. The train length is constrained by short crossing loops and often runs during the day on the down trip due to pathing issues beyond Geelong

A new train depot is being built at Pakenham East as part of the High Capacity Metro Train (HCMT) project. Located between the Princes Freeway (Pakenham Bypass) and Oakview Lane, the depot will require a short extension of electrification from Pakenham station.

El Zorro ran a transfer between Melbourne and Ballarat via North Geelong, T357 took V/Line power van PCJ491 to the Ballarat Workshops for refurbishment, bringing back completed van PCJ493 (formerly PCO2). You don't see Bona (engine and a single guards van) moves that often!

Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway

The Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway is a miniature railway located on eight hectares of parklands overlooking Port Phillip Bay at Point Richards. The dual 7.25 and 5 inch gauge track forms a single loop around the site, with a four road yard with full semaphore signalling pneumatically controlled by an elevated signal box, a six road engine shed in the centre, and an elevated turntable and locomotive stabling yard to one side.

Prodata ticketing equipment on the Bucharest Metro

In the capital of Romania, the Bucharest Metro uses a ticketing system very similar to Metcard, the equipment having been supplied by Prodata - the same company that supplied validators to Melbourne. Magstripe tickets are used for single trips, with smartcards for regular travellers, and the recent introduction of payment via credit card using the contactless Paywave/Paypass technologies

Putting Protective Services Officers at each of Melbourne's 200-odd railway stations was the brainchild of Ted Baillieu and his 'OMG the rail network is swarming with evildoers so each station needs two guys with guns' policy of the 2010 State Election. In reality a handful of stations need the riot squad and the rest see no crime, but since when has a politician backed down from their stupid promises?

PTV Hubs were created in 2012 following the merger of the Met Shop at Melbourne Town Hall with the Central Pass Office and Myki Discovery Centre at Southern Cross Station.

QR National grain wagon transfer, 2011

In April 2011 QR National diesel locomotives LZ3101, LQ3122, DC2206, LZ3103 and 45 AGWF grain hoppers were transferred via Melbourne from Western Australia to New South Wales to begin a new grain contract.

Qube derailment, December 2017

December 23, 2017

On December 23, 2017 Qube's 6CM7 Harefield to Melbourne service came to a halt at McIntyre Loop, supposedly due to a broken rail. Lead locomotive QBX001 had to be rerailed, and was then taken off the train and stabled at the G&V wagon maintenance yard, while L277 arrived light engine to assist remaining locomotive QBX004 to bring the train into Melbourne.

Qube Logistics containerised cement train

In April 2018 Qube Logistics started a new service conveying containerised cement between Sydney and Melbourne. The containers are located at the Maldon cement works and trucked to the Minto intermodal terminal Minto in Sydney, then railed to Victoria Dock in Melbourne, replacing the Berrima to Somerton cement train once operated by Pacific National.
