On November 1, 2016 Southern Shorthaul Railroad locomotives 4911 and 4917 transferred a track machine from Dubbo to Melbourne

Pacific National locomotive provisioning centre

Pacific National's fleet of standard gauge locomotives is refuelled and maintained at the Locomotive Provisioning Centre at South Dynon.

Pacific National interstate steel trains

Until 2021 Pacific National carried raw materials and finished steel product to and from the BlueScope, Arrium and Onesteel plants at Port Kembla, NSW and Westernport, Victoria; with trains running Melbourne-Wollongong-Brisbane and Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth. Since 2022 the trains only transport steel for Liberty Steel Australia from their plant at Whyalla.

Somerton steel shunt

Until 2014 or so Pacific National ran a short trip train from South Dynon to Somerton, converying coil steel for the Tubemakers pipe factory.

El Zorro wagon transfer, 2009

On 1 August 2009 El Zorro ran an empty wagon movement from Adelaide to Melbourne, with FL220 and GL109 hauling a train of CFCLA CQWY well wagons and CQMY container wagons.

707 Operations - Manangatang, December 2017

15 December 2017

On the weekend of 15-17 December 2017 707 Operations ran a train from Melbourne to Manangatang and return, travelling via Bacchus Marsh on the down, and North Shore on the return. T413 & H5 hauled the train, with PCP 294, BS 205, SJ 284, BRS 224, Avoca, Club Car 1, NAM 2336, LAN 2354, VAM 1, and Wando in the consist.

Aurizon standard gauge intermodal

Aurizon commenced operating standard gauge freight services across Australia when precescessor Queensland Rail purchased Interail in 2002, CRT Group in 2005, and Australian Railroad Group in 2006. QR National was rebranded as Aurizon in December 2012. The company withdrew their Melbourne-Brisbane and Melbourne-Perth services in December 2017.

El Zorro Horsham freight

For a period during 2009 El Zorro operated a standard gauge freight service between Melbourne and Horsham

QR National grain hopper transfer, 2011

In April 2011 QR National diesel locomotives LZ3101, LQ3122, DC2206, LZ3103 and 45 AGWF grain hoppers were transferred via Melbourne from Western Australia to New South Wales to begin a new grain contract.

Qube Logistics Horsham freight

Qube Logistics and predecessor P&O Trans Australia operated container services between Melbourne and Horsham. They commenced operating in August 2011 following the end of the MA2/AM2 service, and ended in mid-2012.

Qube Logistics Melbourne-Harefield freight

Qube Logistics operates a train conveying containerised paper products between Melbourne and Harefield in southern NSW. The first services ran in 2012-14, before being diverted to Port Botany in NSW, then returned to Melbourne regularly in 2017-18.

On 24 November 2017 Steamrail Victoria steam locomotives A2 986 and K153 hauled the preserved Tait train between Caulfield and Moorabbin.

SRHC - Spirit of Progress 80th Anniversary Tour, 2017

25 November 2017

The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre operated a Spirit of Progress 80th Anniversary Tour, with locomotives B74 and S303 used along with the majority of the original carriage consist. The train ran from Seymour to Ballarat, travelling via Sunshine, Newport and North Shore in both directions.

Steamrail - South Dynon 2010

In July 2010 Steamrail stabled locomotives R761, K190 and K153 with a set of carriages at South Dynon for an extended period, due to the railway line between the city and the Steamrail depot at Newport being closed for trackwork.

Each year Steamrail runs a series of charter trains in the later half of the year for Dreamscape Tours, taking party goers from Melbourne of an evening out to the Macedon Ranges and return, with plenty of booze and partying along the way

X'Trapolis transfer, November 2017

On 22 November 2017 brand new X'Trapolis train 251M-1426T-252M-249M-1425T-250M was transferred from the Alstom factory at Ballarat North to Epping Workshops, behind SSR T class T363 & SRHC unit T357. The two locomotives and power van BVDY52 arrived at Ballarat from Bendigo the day before, travelling via Sunshine, Newport and North Geelong.

Melbourne suburban Digital Train Radio System

The GSM-R based Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) replaced the analogue Urban Train Radio System (UTRS) used for communication on the Melbourne suburban rail network. Approximately 100 base stations make up the system with more than 70 new towers added to cover the network. Work stated in September 2009 and was completed in 2011, with trials of the on train equipment starting in 2012.

Since 2012 Qube Logistics (formerly P&O Trans Australia) have operated a container service between North Dynon in Melbourne and Tocumwal, with loading also occasionally being attached / removed at Mooroopna (Shepparton).

Pacific National Maryvale paper train

Until June 2013 Pacific National operated the Maryvale Paper train that ran from Melbourne to the Australian Paper factory at Maryvale, north of Morwell. The service is now operated by Qube Logistics.

Pacific National Apex quarry train

The 'Apex' train carries gravel and other quarry products from Kilmore East on the North East line, to Westall in south-eastern Melbourne, Brooklyn in western Melbourne, and North Shore in Geelong. Originally operated by the Victorian Railways, V/Line, Freight Australia then Pacific National, in 2016 Qube Logistics won the contract.

El Zorro Warrnambool freight

Between April and October 2008 El Zorro opereated the Warrnambool freight, carrying containers between Melbourne and the Westvic depot in Warrnambool, usually running Monday through Friday. The train length is constrained by short crossing loops and often runs during the day on the down trip due to pathing issues beyond Geelong

X'Trapolis transfer, October 2017

On 25 October 2017 SSR T classes T363 and T381 and power van BVDY52 transferred brand new X'Trapolis train 245M-1423T-246M-247M-1424T-248M from Ballarat to Epping, travelling via North Geelong and Newport.

The Melbourne Visitor Shuttle was a tourist-oriented bus service operated by Driver Bus Lines on behalf of the City of Melbourne from March 2006 until August 2017. Originally free and known as the 'Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle', it was renamed 'Melbourne Visitor Shuttle' in 2013, with fares introduced in October 2013

VLocity derailment, September 2017

On September 25, 2017 VLocity VL51 derailed at the north end of Southern Cross platform 6. Two bogies ended up off the rails, with jacks being used to get them back onto the rails.

X'Trapolis transfer, September 2017

Automatic rail lubricators

Automatic rail lubricators are used to apply grease to the running rails, avoiding wheel wear on sharp curves. Traditionally mechanical 'grease pots' were used for this purpose, but require frequent maintenance and apply grease in an inaccurate manner. Modern replacements are powered units, which use trackside sensors to pump out grease only when required.

Transdev Melbourne leased buses

In mid September 2017 Transport Safety Victoria and VicRoads completed an audit of the Transdev Melbourne fleet of buses. Initially 33 buses at two depots were removed from service due to defects, with 100+ buses eventually being taken off the road once all depots had been visited. Buses from Dysons Group and Sita Buslines were 'wet leased' to fill the gaps, with Transdev drivers directing drivers on the 'foreign' routes. 'Dry leasing' soon followed, with Transdev drivers in charge of the foreign buses, with Kastoria and Mitchell Transit also supplying vehicles.

St Kilda Road and Toorak Road West tram diversion works

To make room for the Metro Tunnel station construction site at Domain Interchange, in June 2017 route 58 (formerly route 8) trams were diverted from Domain Road and Park Street to new tracks along Toorak Road West. Further track slews on St Kilda Road were completed in 2018 and 2019 to move the tram tracks away from works on the station box, with a final track slew completed in 2022 to move the tracks onto their final alignment beside the future station entrance.

Steamrail - Castlemaine charter, September 2017

On 16 September 2017 Steamrail operated a charter from Melbourne to Castlemaine and return with A2 986, with carriages 17BE, 3ABE, 7ABE, 38BE, 1BCE, and water gin VZVF1. K190 was also attached to the down leg of the trip, on transfer to the Victorian Goldfields Railway.
