Steamrail - Wycheproof Weekender October 2008

Steamrail ran a weekender tour from Melbourne to Wycheproof, leaving on Friday night with R761, T356 and S301 and arriving on Saturday morning. The train stabled at Wycheproof station, with S301 taking the train home on Sunday. The train ran early until Maryborough, where it had to wait for the proper departure time. It ran back via the straight, the photos are from Sunday, between Wycheproof and Bacchus Marsh.

Steamrail - Last Steam to Albury 2008

Steamrail ran their 'Last Steam to Albury' tour on June 14, 2008 with R761 up front, with D3 658 assisting to Seymour. The photos are from Heathcote Junction in the morning all the way until the eventual 2 am cancellation at Seymour. It left late, lost it's path, arrived late at Albury, got put away at Wangaratta for 2 hours, and almost made it back to Seymour when it came to a halt. The train crawled into Seymour at 2 am and was cancelled due to a lack of signallers along the line, the passengers travelling onward on buses. By 3:30 am they well all gone, the carriages stabled in the yard, the loco places in the SRHC depot where their fires were dropped.

Steamrail ran a "Santa Special" from Caulfield to Geelong (via. Newport) on Sunday December 18th 2005. K153 was the loco, with a mix of wooden and steel cars

T356 was the loco, and the train ran through to South Geelong to run around due to football specials taking up space at the usual destination of Geelong. I didn't notice until my way home...

Seymour Railway Heritage Centre depot

The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre restores and manages a fleet of heritage locomotives and rolling stock. Their depot is at Seymour station beside the locomotive depot

Locomotive hauled Sprinter, February 2006

Sprinter railcars are self propelled, but can be hauled by locomotives through the use of a special transition coupler. Here two broken down Sprinters were in the platform - 7002 and 7008, along with N453 waiting to take them away. The EDI rail guys had a bit of difficulty getting the transition coupler to fit - necessary because of the different coupler types

V/Line hired locomotives

Occasionally V/Line has motive power shortages or failures, and need to hire locomotives from other operators for use on their own trains. In the photos here it is Freight Australia / Pacific National as the hirer

V/Line special carriages

V/Line once had a special fleet of carriages that could be hired out and attached to ordinary services, including Club Car Victoria and Parlor Car Norman. Carriages managed by heritage operators have also appeared on special trains. In recent years these cars have been stored or passed to heritage operators and the carriages have appeared less frequently

During the Southern Cross Station redevelopment works short trains operated between the station and the Creek Sidings at North Melbourne, carrying spoil, asphalt, and other materials. CFCLA and SSR T classes were the usual motive power

Siemens train braking issues

A number of Melbourne's Siemens trains were withdrawn from service in 2007 due to braking issues. The Werribee line between Newport and Laverton was used to test the affected sets. The test procedure involved spraying soapy water onto the rails to confirm the operation of the brakes. By 2010 it was decided the solution to the problem was to install sandboxes to the middle four bogies of each 3-car set.

Flemington Racecourse line

The Flemington Racecourse line is a short branch off the Broadmeadows line in the inner north-west of Melbourne. It is used for special events at the Flemington racecourse and the showgrounds.

Last days of S302

January 13, 2006

S302 was bought by West Coast Railway soon after they were formed, and ran with them for a number of years. After their demise it was purchased by V/Line, who continued to use it on the midday Warrnambool train, where it was often replaced by an N class. S302 made her last run on January 13, 2006 after which it was put into storage. It was subsequently sold to El Zorro who operate it today

Newport Workshops 'Rotten Road'

'Rotten Road' at the Newport Workshops in Melbourne is located beside the Geelong railway line, and is full of heritage rolling stock stored in the open. In 2008 Victrack has started to scrap the stuff which is falling apart.

Shell Refinery at Corio despatched fuel by rail until early 2008, with the last destinations being Mildura and Shepparton. Before this time Y class locos usually took the wagons to and from North Geelong Yard

NSW Rail Transport Museum - Ararat 2007

Every so often the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum runs their heritage trains across the border and into 'Mexico' - this time 4201 and 4520 lead their Southern Auroa set through Melbourne to Ararat.

North Geelong wagon scrapping

All kinds of wagons are stored at North Geelong Yard, in early to mid 2008 Pacific National started to scrap a lot of the older wagons. After a lull, work restarting with tank wagons and VHCA cement hoppers in 2010, with more tank wagons being scrapped in March 2011. Scrapping of hopper wagons commenced in late 2014.
