Bayside Rail Project

In May 2013 Premier Denis Napthine announced the $100 million 'Bayside Rail Project' to upgrade the Frankston railway line, and bring X'Trapolis trains to the route. Two token services run by X'Trapolis trains being introduced just before the 2014 State Election, with the cost of the project blowing out to $115 million.

VLocity transfer to Bendigo, November 2014

B75 and T386 transferred an accident damaged VLocity set VL12 to Bendigo on November 4, 2014. The set was involved in an incident on August 22 2014, when empty VLocity train (VL05-12-39, 7 cars) ran into the rear of a Metro Trains service between Galvin and Paisley on the Werribee line.

Cairns Kuranda Steam Railway

For eight months in 2004 the Cairns Kuranda Steam Railway once ran a steam service using ex-South African Railways 24 Class steam locomotive #3620 and a set of ex-QR SX carriages. Today they run the 'Savannahlander' service under a contract with QR, and shunt the cement siding at Cairns using a pair of ex-Emu Bay Railway 11 Class diesels.

Sugar cane tramways of Queensland

Across Far North Queensland multiple networks of 2 foot gauge tramways cross the countryside, linking sugar cane farms to sugar mills in nearby towns. Along the way they cross the main North Coast railway via diamond crossings and drawbridges.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

The Kuranda Scenic Railway operates from Cairns to Kuranda and return, with the journey taking around 2 hours, with a stop at 'Freshwater' station for tour buses, and one at Barron Falls to observe the waterfall. A pair of 1720 class locomotives haul each train with two down services services operating each morning, and two up services in the evening.

On the morning of July 11, 2014 the Sydney-bound XPT derailed just outside Southern Cross Station, where the dual gauge tracks over the North Melbourne flyover split into separate standard and broad gauge tracks. The newly rebuilt tracks has just opened for service that morning.

On April 12, 2014 the Elecrail division of Steamrail ran a Farewell Hitachi Train Tour around the Melbourne suburbs with 288M-1979T-287M + 274M-1909T-273M. Starting at Craigieburn, the tour headed into the city via the Northern Loop, out to South Morang via the Clifton Hill Loop, then out to Sunbury and back via the Northern Loop, then finally back to Craigieburn.

On October 26, 2013 Steamrail Victoria ran a through train from Southern Cross to Maldon, swapping locomotives at Castlemaine and Maldon. R761 and K190 led the down trip, with J515 replacing the R class on the branch. With a number of photostops along the way, J515 swapped with J549 at Muckleford, with the return trip from Maldon using J549 and D3 639. R761 and D3 639 took the train back to Melbourne, the swapping over the K and D3 being the original reason for the trip.

Located off Champion Road in North Williamstown, the Newport Railway Museum hosts an open air collection of steam, diesel and electric trains from the railways of Victoria, alongside other railway exhibits. The ARHS operated railway museum was established in 1962, and was closed to public access 2010-2014 due to visitor safety concerns, but has since reopened and seen upgrades to place exhibits undercover.
