In January 2022 Qube Logistics commenced transporting BlueScope Steel products to the BlueScope Steel mill at Hastings, south of Frankston, after winning a 10 year joint contract from Pacific National in 2020. The steel is transferred from broad to standard gauge trains at the Melbourne Freight Terminal at South Dynon.

On 17 December 2021 retired Comeng sets 341M-1021T-463M and 376M-1038T-362M were transferred by T381 and B75 from Newport Workshops to Tottenham Yard via Brooklyn for long term storage.

North McKinnon Centre level crossing removal replacement buses

During 2016 buses have replaced trains while three level level crossings on the Frankston line were removed - North Road, McKinnon Road, and Centre Road with Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh stations also being rebuilt.

Comeng retirement transfer, 30 November 2021

On 30 November 2021 Alstom Comeng set 538M-1119T-537M transferred stripped Comeng set 362M-1038T-376M from Westall to Newport Workshops. T385 and P17 then transferred sets 537M-1119T-538M and 359M-1030T-360M to Tottenham Yard on 3 December, with 537M-1119T-538M being transferred onwards to the SSR workshops at North Bendigo on 4 December.

Steamrail - Sandringham suburban shuttles 2021

On 10 and 11 November 2021 K183 and K153 ran suburban shuttles from Flinders Street Station to Sandringham. The train was made up with carriages 17BE, 46BE, 7ABE, 25BE and 1 BCE.

Steamrail - Christmas charters 2021

Each year Steamrail runs a series of charter trains in the later half of the year for Dreamscape Tours, taking party goers from Melbourne of an evening out to the Macedon Ranges and return, with plenty of booze and partying along the way.

Parkdale level crossing removal project

The level crossings on the Frankston line at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale are being removed by raising the railway line, with a new station built at Parkdale.

Glen Huntly level crossing removal project

The level crossings on the Frankston line at Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road in Glen Huntly will be removed by lowering the line into a trench, with a new station to be built at Glenhuntly.

707 Operations - 'Picnic Express' to Bacchus Marsh 2021

707 Operations ran four 'Picnic Express' trains from Southern Cross to Bacchus Marsh and return over two weekends in November 2021. Steam locomotive R707 and diesel Y127 freshly repainted in V/Line livery hauling the train made up of PCP 294, BZ 270, BRS 224, Club Car 1 and CP 35. The train ran empty to the Maddingley Sidings, while R707 was turned on the turntable at Bacchus Marsh.

On 13 November 2021 K183 completed a test run to Gheringhap and Geelong following a restoration to service, hauling carriages 1BCE, 38BE, 46BE and water gin VZVF 1.

HCMT set 35 delivery transfer, November 2021

On the evening of 14 November 2021 newly completed HCMT set 35 was transferred from Newport Workshops to the depot at Pakenham East behind SSR diesel locomotives P18 and P16 with power van BVDY51. The locomotives and power van arrived at Newport the day before.

On 6 November 2021 retired Comeng sets 336M-1069T-437M and 414M-1057T-413M were transferred by P16 and P18 from Newport Workshops to Tottenham Yard via Brooklyn for long term storage.

707 Operations - Castlemaine transfer, 2021

On the early morning of Sunday 31 October 2021 707 Operations sent A66 and a freshly repained in V/Line liveried Y127 from Newport Wokrshops to Castlemaine via Sunshine to transfer ex-Bluebird railcar BM 259 to the Victorian Goldfields Railway. 'The Overland' carriages PCP 294 – JTA 6 – CLUB 1 – SJ 284 and CP 35 also came along, being used on a Victorian Goldfields Railway charter run to Maldon later that day, then back to Melbourne that afternoon.

Steamrail - Ballarat East transfer, 2021

On the weekend of 30 and 31 October 2021 Steamrail Victoria sent S313 and T356 to Ballarat East via North Geelong to collect steam locomotive Y112, with VZVF1, PCP 292, Goulburn, SJ 282 'Tantini' brought along to accommodate the Steamrail crew.

HCMT High Capacity Signalling testing at Epping

In 2019 work started on the installation of trial High Capacity Signalling equipment between Epping and South Morang stations. A pair of X'Trapolis trains completed the initial testing from September 2020, with High Capacity Metro Trains entering the test program from August 2021.

On Sunday 24 October 2021 R707 lead a driver training run from Newport Workshops to Seymour via Brooklyn and Sunshine, using carriages PCP 294 - ACZ 255 - BZ 270 - BRS 224 - LAN 2352 - CP 35.

North Williamstown level crossing removal replacement buses

During 2021 buses have replaced trains on the Williamstown line beyond Newport while the level crossing at Ferguson Street, Williamstown is removed.

On 23 October 2021 retired Comeng sets 311M-1006T-312M and 318M-1009T-317M were transferred by T395 and T386 from Newport Workshops to Tottenham Yard via Melbourne Yard for long term storage.

HCMT set 34 delivery transfer, October 2021

On the evening of 19 October 2021 newly completed HCMT set 34 was transferred from Newport Workshops to the depot at Pakenham East behind hired Steamrail diesel locomotives T395 and T364 and power van BVDY51. The locomotives and power van arrived at Newport the day before.

Stored Comeng trains at Tottenham Yard

In August 2021 the first Comeng trains were withdrawn from service and placed into storage. The first four 6-car sets were transferred to the North Shore sidings in Geelong for storage, with subsequent sets sent to Tottenham Yard.

On Saturday 2 October 2021 Steamrail Victoria's A2 986 headed from Melbourne to Bendigo and return on a driver training run, hauling water gin VZVF1 and V/Line carriage sets SH29 and LH32.

Steamrail - K183 test runs, October 2021

In 2021 Steamrail completed the return to service of steam locomotive K183 following a fatal level crossing accident, with a number of light engine test runs made between Newport and Sunshine, followed by a test run to Gheringhap and Geelong.

707 Operations - Ballarat driver training, October 2021

On Saturday 2 October 2021 707 Operations' recently overhauled steam locomotive R707 headed from Melbourne to Ballarat and return on a driver training run, hauling V/Line carriage sets SH29 and LH32. R707 had been out of service for almost two years, to allow the replacement of the main internal steam pipe, regulator adjustments and repair, fitting of new element tubes and ash pan replacement.

HCMT set 1 transfer, September 2021

After sitting idle for months on end at Pakenham East depot having never run on the mainline under it's own power, on 24 September 2021 HCMT set 1 was returned to Newport Workshops for rectification works to the electrical system.

On 23 September 2021 recently gauge converted VLocity VS93 departed South Dynon for Seymour on standard gauge, in preparation for testing on the North East line.

Victoria Police shut down public transport to inner Melbourne

18 September 2021

On 18 September 2021 Victoria Police requested the shutdown of all public transport to the Melbourne CBD between 8am and 2pm, an attempt to disrupt a planned anti-lockdown protest. Train, tram and bus services all terminated far beyond the inner city, with a token 'Authorised Worker Shuttle' bus service running every 30 minutes express from the terminating locations to the Melbourne CBD. The remainder of the rail network was left without any alternative services.

High Capacity Metro Train testing on the Flemington Racecourse line
