St Kilda Road and Toorak Road West tram diversion works

To make room for the Metro Tunnel station construction site at Domain Interchange, in June 2017 route 58 (formerly route 8) trams were diverted from Domain Road and Park Street to new tracks along Toorak Road West. Further track slews on St Kilda Road were completed in 2018 and 2019 to move the tram tracks away from works on the station box, with a final track slew completed in 2022 to move the tracks onto their final alignment beside the future station entrance.

Metro Tunnel test trains

On the morning of 25 July 2023 the first trains entered the Metro Tunnel via the South Yarra portal to commence the testing program. Additional trains have since been rotated through the tunnel, a full occupation being required on the mainline tracks so they can enter the normally blocked off junction.

In July 2023 testing commenced on the High Capacity Signalling equipment between the Metro Tunnel portal at South Kensington and the turnback platform at West Footscray station.

In July 2023 Sprinter and Siemens trains operated over the suburban tracks between Sunshine and North Melbourne, testing the train control interfaces at North Melbourne/South Kensington and West Footscray/Tottenham, following commissioning of the new signalling system between the Metro Tunnel portal and the West Footscray turnback.

During 2019 ground improvement works were completed along the Metro Tunnel corridor at Lloyd Street in Kensington and beside Moonee Ponds Creek, injecting grout into the soil to ensure that cross passages CP02, CP03 and CP04 could be safely excavated without surface movement or groundwater ingress.

To make room for the western Metro Tunnel portal beside the Sunbury line at South Kensington, freight sidings at North Dynon were relocated to the south, which made room for the relocation of 220 kV high voltage transmission lines from the future rail corridor.
