On 29 November 2019 SSR locomotives T363 and P14 with the usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon BQHX 2247 led X'Trapolis train 170M-1385T-169M and 236M-1418T-235M to Alstom Ballarat for upgrade works. The train ran from Newport to Ballarat via the suburban lines and North Geelong, the locomotives having run around the consist at Southern Cross Station platform 8.

Ballarat Line Upgrade consolidation trains

As part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade works that have duplicated the railway between between Caroline Springs and Melton, on 27 November 2019 a pair of heavy freight trains ran across the newly commissioned track for 24 hours, consolidating the recently laid ballast before normal services commenced on the line.

Qube's train was made up of B76, T373 and T376 push-pull with G512, container wagons from the Maryvale service, and cement tanktainers from the Dandenong service. Southern Shorthaul Railroad's train was made up of B75, S312, P17 and P18 push-pull with S302 and S317 on the Kensington grain consist.

On 26 November 2019 SSR locomotives T363 and P14 with the usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon BQHX 2247 led X'Trapolis train 953M-1677T-954M and 139M-1370T-140M to Alstom Ballarat for upgrade works. The train ran from Newport to Ballarat via the suburban lines and North Geelong, the locomotives having run around the consist at Melbourne Yard.

HCMT set 7 transfer, October 2019

On the morning of 24 October 2019 the seventh High Capacity Metro Train set was transferred from the Downer facility at Newport Workshops to the future HCMT depot at Pakenham East. Southern Shorthaul Railroad ran the transfer, with P16 and T386, generator van BVDY51, and finally the HCMT set. The braking system has now been certified for mainline use following tests of earlier trains at Pakenham East, so no braking wagons needed to accompany the movement.

On 9 July 2019 SSR locomotives P17 and P18 with the usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon BQJX 2481W led X'Trapolis train 98M-1349T-97M and 179M-1390T-180M to Alstom Ballarat for upgrade works. The plan was for the train to reach Ballarat via North Geelong, the locomotives to run around the consist at Tottenham Yard, but instead they continued through to Melbourne Yard, running around there, then heading to North Geelong via the Brooklyn goods lines.

On 30 April 2019 newly acquired SSR locomotives P18 and P17 took power van BVDY51 to Newport Workshops for a HCMT transfer, then transferred X'Trapolis train 29M-1315T-30M and 53M-1327T-54M with usual power van BVDY52 and transition wagon AFGF 3Q from Newport Workshops to Alstom Ballarat via Sunshine and Bacchus Marsh for upgrade work.

On 9 January 2019 T386 and T381 led X'Trapolis train 163M-1382T-164M and 933M-1667T-934M from Newport Workshops to Alstom Ballarat via Sunshine and Bacchus Marsh for upgrade work. Along with the usual power van BVDY52, freshly overhauled flat wagon AFGF 3Q was added to compensate between the lower than normal coupler on the X'Trapolis EMU and the higher than normal coupler on the BVDY power van.

On 11 December 2018 T381 and T386 with power van BVDY52 transferred X'Trapolis train 965M-1683T-966M and 935M-1668T-936M from Newport Workshops via North Melbourne and North Geelong to the Alstom plant at Ballarat North for modification works.

High Capacity Metro Train transfer, November 2018

On the morning of 29 November 2018 the first completed High Capacity Metro Train set was transferred from the Downer facility at Newport Workshops to the future HCMT depot at Pakenham East, stopping multiple times along the way to inspect the new train was moving safely.

Southern Shorthaul Railroad run the transfer, with S302 in the lead, followed by a mix of 20 SSR grain wagons usually used on the Kensington grain service, then by S317, T385 and T363, generator van BVDY51, and finally the HCMT set. The emergency brake was operational onboard the new train, but the ECP service brake was not, hence additional braking wagons were required to accompany the movement.

On 19 November 2018 T363 lead T385 with power van BVDY52 transferred X'Trapolis train55M-1328T-56M + 107M-1354T-108M from Newport Workshops via Sunshine and Bacchus Marsh to the Alstom plant at Ballarat North for modification works.

On 30 October 2018 T385 and T386 with power van BVDY52 transferred X'Trapolis train 31M–1316T–32M and 923M–1662T–924M from Newport Workshops via Sunshine and North Geelong to the Alstom plant at Ballarat North for modification works. The initial movement from Newport Workshops to the GEB sidings at Sunshine was push pull, due to an inability to reverse the train at Newport, with T386 being shunted onto the front of the train to lead it west to Ballarat.

On 20 December 2017 Southern Shorthaul Railroad locomotives T363 and T385 and power van BVDY52 transferred a brand new X'Trapolis train from Ballarat Workshops to the Epping Workshops in Melbourne. Leading set 255M–1428T–256M was in a plain white livery, while 253M–1427T–254M had the usual Metro livery already applied.

In October 2015 Southern Shorthaul Railroad overhauled a rake of BGGX/BGGY grain hoppers at their Bendigo Workshops and transported them by road to Benalla, were they were placed on standard gauge for the trip north to NSW.
