Ballarat Line Upgrade consolidation trains

27 November 2019

As part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade works that have duplicated the railway between between Caroline Springs and Melton, on 27 November 2019 a pair of heavy freight trains ran across the newly commissioned track for 24 hours, consolidating the recently laid ballast before normal services commenced on the line.

Qube's train was made up of B76, T373 and T376 push-pull with G512, container wagons from the Maryvale service, and cement tanktainers from the Dandenong service. Southern Shorthaul Railroad's train was made up of B75, S312, P17 and P18 push-pull with S302 and S317 on the Kensington grain consist.

Bendigo Rail Workshops

The Bendigo Rail Workshops at North Bendigo are used by Southern Shorthaul Railroad to maintain broad gauge rolling stock for Pacific National, V/Line, Metro Trains Melbourne and CFCLA.

T385 and P17 then transferred sets 537M-1119T-538M and 359M-1030T-360M to Tottenham Yard on 3 December, with 537M-1119T-538M being transferred onwards to the SSR workshops at North Bendigo on 4 December.

In the early hours of 6 May 2022 SSR locomotives T385, T386 and T381 lead burnt out Comeng set 491M-1096T-492M and 339M-1020T-340M from storage at North Shore to the McConnell Dowell yard at McIntyre for scrapping. Due to the fire damage to carriage 492M, the push-pull transfer traveled at a maximum speed of 30 km/h for the entire trip, travelling via Werribee, Newport and Sunshine.

On the morning of 24 October 2019 the seventh High Capacity Metro Train set was transferred from the Downer facility at Newport Workshops to the future HCMT depot at Pakenham East. Southern Shorthaul Railroad ran the transfer, with P16 and T386, generator van BVDY51, and finally the HCMT set. The braking system has now been certified for mainline use following tests of earlier trains at Pakenham East, so no braking wagons needed to accompany the movement.

On the morning of 9 December 2019 the eighth High Capacity Metro Train set was transferred from the Downer facility at Newport Workshops to the future HCMT depot at Pakenham East. Southern Shorthaul Railroad ran the transfer, with P16 and P17, generator van BVDY51, and finally the HCMT set. The transfer left Newport after the last train of the evening, so there was no need for buses to replace trains on the Werribee line, like previous transfers.

High Capacity Metro Train set 1 delivery transfer, November 2018

On the morning of 29 November 2018 the first completed High Capacity Metro Train set was transferred from the Downer facility at Newport Workshops to the future HCMT depot at Pakenham East, stopping multiple times along the way to inspect the new train was moving safely.


Southern Shorthaul Railroad run the transfer, with S302 in the lead, followed by a mix of 20 SSR grain hoppers usually used on the Kensington grain service, then by S317, T385 and T363, generator van BVDY51, and finally the HCMT set. The emergency brake was operational onboard the new train, but the ECP service brake was not, hence additional braking wagons were required to accompany the movement.

On the weekend of 19-23 October 2019 Southern Shorthaul Railroad operated works trains to Southern Cross Station, carrying ballast, rail, sleepers and everything else needed to replace two double compounds in the yard at the north end of platforms 3 and 4.

On Thursday 31 March 2022 a down grain train led by S317, T363 and P14 headed into Tottenham Yard, but P14 derailed on a set of points and ended up split between two tracks. Recovery of the train took a few days to complete.

On 3 October 2018 brand new X'Trapolis train 281M-1441T-282M + 283M-1442T-284M was transferred from the Alstom factory at Ballarat North to Epping Workshops, behind SSR T classes T386 & T385. The two locomotives and power van BVDY52 arrived at Ballarat from South Dynon the day before, travelling via Newport and North Geelong.

The plan was for the train to reach Ballarat via North Geelong, the locomotives to run around the consist at Tottenham Yard, but instead they continued through to Melbourne Yard, running around there, then heading to North Geelong via the Brooklyn goods lines.
