Pacific National, SCT Logistics and Qube Logistics operate freight trains across Australia transporting steel products.

BlueScope Port Kembla

The BlueScope steelworks complex at Port Kembla has an internal standard gauge rail system, with Watco using a fleet of PB class locomotives to shunt wagons loaded with steel between the different facilities.

Pacific National interstate steel trains

11 October 2022

Until 2021 Pacific National carried raw materials and finished steel product to and from the BlueScope, Arrium and Onesteel plants at Port Kembla, NSW and Westernport, Victoria; with trains running Melbourne-Wollongong-Brisbane and Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth. Since 2022 the trains only transport steel for Liberty Steel Australia from their plant at Whyalla.

Pacific National Long Island steel train

1 January 2022

Until 2020 Pacific National operated the Long Island steel train to the BlueScope Steel mill at Hastings, south of Frankston. The steel is transferred from broad to standard gauge trains at the Melbourne Freight Terminal at South Dynon. In 2015 this facility replaced the Melbourne Steel Terminal, just west of North Melbourne station.

Qube Logistics interstate steel trains

4 November 2022

In December 2021 Qube Logistics commenced transporting BlueScope Steel products along the east coast, after winning a 10 year joint contract with SCT Logistics from Pacific National in 2020.

Qube Logistics Long Island steel train

22 November 2022

In January 2022 Qube Logistics commenced transporting BlueScope Steel products to the BlueScope Steel mill at Hastings, south of Frankston, after winning a 10 year joint contract from Pacific National in 2020. The steel is transferred from broad to standard gauge trains at the Melbourne Freight Terminal at South Dynon.

SCT Logistics - steel trains

18 July 2022

In 2021 SCT Logistics commenced transporting BlueScope Steel products on the East-West corridor, after winning a 10 year joint contract with Qube Logistics from Pacific National in 2020.

Somerton steel shunt

11 November 2014

Until 2014 or so Pacific National ran a short trip train from South Dynon to Somerton, converying coil steel for the Tubemakers pipe factory.
