The 12km route will feature 19 stops, extending from Circular Quay along George Street to Central Station, through Surry Hills to Moore Park, then to Kensington and Kingsford via Anzac Parade and Randwick via Alison Road and High Street.

Originally known as the 'Sydney Light Rail' and then the 'Metro Light Rail', a fleet of 7 Variotrams operated between Central Station and the inner suburb of Lilyfield along the former alignment of the former Darling Harbour Goods Line. The line has since been extended to Dulwich Hill, with a new fleet of Urbos 3 light rail vehicles acquired to run the expanded service.

Pacific National Cripps Creek garbage train

Since 2004 Pacific National runs garbage trains from Veolia's transfer stations at Clyde and Banksmeadow in metropolitan Sydney to the Cripps Creek intermodal terminal, outside Tarago in the Southern Highlands. From there the containerised rubbish is transferred to the Woodlawn Bioreactor, where the waste is placed in a former quarry to generate energy from landfill gas.

Sydney Metro Bankstown line conversion

In 2019 the conversion of the T3 Bankstown Line to form part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line commenced. Tracks, stations and signals will be upgraded between Bankstown and Sydenham, where the existing railway will connect to new tunnels towards the Sydney CBD.
